In the summer of 2006, my family stayed at the boyhood home of Andy Griffith in Mt Airy, North Carolina. This is where he grew up before he went on to Hollywood and became the sheriff of the fictional Mayberry, which is based on Mt Airy. The home of old-time music legend Tommy Jarrell, bluegrass gospel legends The Easter Brothers, country singer Donna Fargo, Mount Airy has a long history with regional music. This area is home to the Round Peak style of old-time music, which started in the Round Peak community, just west of Mount Airy.

“At first Sheldon didn’t want it to be in North Carolina, he just wanted it to be somewhere in the South. So, we did have Mount Pilot which there’s a place called Pilot Mountain up near Mount Airy. But, I gradually started slipping in real towns in North Carolina like Asheville, and Raleigh and Siler City. The house contains antiques and is decorated in a 1930s-1940s style with Griffith memorabilia. Part of that mission was a substantial renovation of the museum’s exhibits that was completed in 2017. The state-of-the art improvements are intended not only to greatly enhance the museum experience for visitors, but also to ensure the careful preservation of the collection for generations to come. Finally, on our way out of Mount Airy, we decided go by Andy Griffith’s actual house that he had purchased in 1935 and lived in. I went into a lot of the shops and me and my family decided to stop in at Walker’s Soda Fountain and get a milkshake. Walker’s is set up like a 50s diner and is so adorable inside!

Held the second weekend in October, the Autumn Leaves Festival attracts over 200,000 people to the city during the festival weekend. Vendors sell food and other items, and there is a stage for musicians. The Andy Griffith Museum, founded in 2009 by Emmett Forrest, attracts 200 visitors a day.
